ABOUT HEART OF FLESH
Heart of Flesh is a biannual, online and print literary journal that seeks quality writing and art with a Christian element. We are not a typical “Christian fiction” journal. We believe God’s truth as written in the Bible can be found in both the sacred and the secular, in nearly every work of literature and every part of the human condition.
We like hopeful. We also like bleak. We like desperation and grit. But only if there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We want to see that golden pinprick of light guiding us out of the darkness.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
We prefer literary work, but we accept all genres of poetry, flash fiction, short stories, nonfiction, and visual art & photography from both Christians and non-Christians, as long as it includes a Christian theme.
What are Christian Themes?
Redemption, hope, charity, love (Agape), awe and praise, the fruitlessness of self love, the ugliness or destructiveness of sin, the attractiveness of sin, a desperate need for soul-cleansing, a righteous heart shining against the backdrop of a fallen world, a battle against temptation, anything that portrays the deepness and profoundness of scripture or Biblical people.
What we would LOVE to see: complexity and depth of Christian issues on the level of Flannery O’Conner. Also, the Christian version of Sylvia Plath.
We also love work that surprises us, so if you don’t think you fit the mold, give us a shot anyway!
What we do NOT love: cheesiness, preachy writing, gratuitous sex or violence, excessive profanity (keep it somewhere between PG and PG-13).

*NEW* BLOG SUBMISSION: CHRISTIAN TESTIMONIES
We want to share your Christian testimony on our blog!
A Christian testimony is the story of how a person came to know Jesus Christ through the moving of the Holy Spirit. It often includes (but is not limited to):
- the story of a person’s life before Christ,
- the story of how the Lord saved him/her, and finally
- a short reflection of his/her new life in Christ.
These stories are often moving, powerful, and fantastic displays of forgiveness, redemption, and life-altering hope. While we accept work from both Christian and non-Christians for our regular issues, we are asking Christian contributors to share their testimonies with the hope that compelling accounts of finding salvation in Jesus will bless our readers and plant the Gospel seed in those searching for truth.
A selection of testimonies will be posted weekly during the months of April and October in our blog, separate from our regularly published issues. It may not be possible to post every testimony we receive in the limited space we have, so we encourage those not chosen to not be disappointed and to continue sharing your testimony with others. We want to emphasize that every personal story of Christ’s redeeming power is miraculous and wonderful.
We are so excited to read the story of how Christ drew you in and made you His own.
Expect to see the first testimonies on our blog beginning October 7, 2020.
Word count: between 500 – 4,000 words
Testimonies may be previously published. We only ask for the non-exclusive right to publish it on our blog.
Please include a short 50-word bio and a photo of yourself (this is optional) to include with the testimony should it be selected.
No cover letter is necessary, but please include the word “Testimony” in the subject line of your e-mail and send to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Note: You will be informed via e-mail if your testimony is selected for our blog. If you do not hear from us by October 6th, it means that we will not be sharing your testimony.
