Artist Statement

Fifteen years ago, my very first painting was a version of the earliest known painting of The Virgin Mary and Child and it has always been my will from that beginning to evangelize by glorifying and praising the Lord in all His Beauty — which of course includes by extension His Creation and most especially those made in His Image and Likeness and their lives.

For the last nine years, I have lived in an area of Toronto most stricken with crime, drug abuse, prostitution, mental illness, and homelessness. Often these are the subjects of my paintings, as I hope to express the spiritual battle and struggle at the heart of the earthly lives of my neighbours. God certainly lives in, through, and amongst us.

Chris Fung was born and raised Toronto, Canada and still lives and works there. He is a Catholic folk painter working primarily with oil on canvas. He studied film and video production at York University in the mid-90s, but then shifted to drawing and sumi-e ink painting in the 00s and has been painting in the present mediums oil on canvas for the last fifteen years. He has had six solo exhibitions over the years and most recently two shows in 2023 and July 2024, all in Toronto. You can find Chris on his website, www.chrissyfung.com, or email him at chestnutchild@hotmail.com.
